First, I come in repentance, asking Your forgiveness for wherever we have tolerated or legalized things that have been in opposition to Your word and Your will. Now, I ask for Your wisdom and Your courage, Your boldness to rest upon these men and women of this Senate so that they may create and endorse just and righteous laws and that they will fearlessly oppose and reject any unrighteous edicts from this place of governmental authority. Father, Your word says that, godliness makes a nation great, but that sin is a disgrace to any people. STATEMENT SUBMITTED
Senator Eckhardt submitted the following statement:
I am so pleased and appreciative to have so many alumni here in the chamber today representing two of our prestigious state universities. Texas A&M and the University of Texas at Austin are regularly rated as two of the top public universities and we have all of you to thank for that. UT Austin attracts nearly $700 Million annually in research expenditures. UT Austin alumni add more than $6 Billion annually to the state economy. The economic impact of UT Austin equates to approximately $8.8 Billion in human capital creation, start-ups, and spin-off companies. That equates to 133,000 jobs created annually. That is thanks to the amazing work of the students, faculty, alumni, and leadership.
World renowned faculty have been leaders in many research areas including:
The creation of the most widely used COVID-19 vaccines that helped slow the deadly effects of the pandemic;
Modeling that provided policymakers with key predictive data on the spread of diseases like influenza and COVID-19;
Engineering innovations like self-watering soil which could transform the way we farm in a world impacted by climate change; and
The world's fastest supercomputers for open research that is assisting with everything from transportation engineering to treating cancer.
This is all possible because these two flagship universities are able to attract the best and brightest from around the nation, and indeed, from the world to come to Texas. The central underpinning of academics is intellectual curiosity and willingness to explore the world.
The merit of this academic exploration benefits not only professors, students, and institutions - but broader society through the discovery of new knowledge and innovations, and ultimately, through economic, social and technological progress. In short, academic freedom serves the common good and is a principle we must steadfastly protect.
